Capacity Development in physical oceanography and marine ecology in West Africa

There is a serious lack of physical oceanographers in West African research institutions. Initiatives exist in terms of capacity building at the MSc level in West Africa to solve this problem, and which are lead by AWA partners. We also intend to provide marine ecology and fisheries MSc courses, following the same procedure.

AWA will organize summer schools for selected MSc students, PhD, Postdoc, early career and senior scientists. These summer schools will last 1-2 weeks, and will provide expertise in specific skills used in the project e.g. processing of satellite and/or in situ data. We will take into account the various initiatives of international organizations, and will be supported by initiatives based in Germany (University of Kiel or Hamburg, or Bremen) and France (at the ‘IUEM’ European Institute for Marine Studies or should be held in Montpellier (UM2) Toulouse (UPS) or Paris (UPMC)) or in Europe.

AWA will select the best students, who will be sent to the two summer schools and also provide help with organization. Training courses on selected topics could be compiled and developed by the German and French partners involved in the project, backed up by other scientists. The project will also make best use of external sources of funding for the further training of African scientists, students and technicians.
